FAQ
Everything You Need to Know About Affordable DTF Printing
At Affordable DTF, we want your printing experience to be easy, clear, and worry-free. Below are answers to the most common questions our customers ask about DTF printing, gang sheets, file requirements, heat press settings, shipping, and more.
DTF stands for Direct-to-Film. Your artwork is printed onto a special PET film using high-quality CMYK inks plus a white underbase layer. Adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink, then cured with heat. The finished film is a ready-to-press transfer that permanently bonds to fabric when applied with a heat press at around 320°F for 10–15 seconds.
The result is a vibrant, full-color print that is soft to the touch, stretchy, and built to last through 50+ washes without cracking, peeling, or fading.
- vs. Screen printing: No setup fees, no minimums, and full-color photorealistic artwork on single pieces. Screen printing only makes sense at high volumes with simple designs.
- vs. HTV (heat transfer vinyl): HTV is cut from solid-color sheets — great for simple text or blocks. DTF handles gradients, photographs, and fine detail that vinyl physically cannot replicate.
- vs. Sublimation: Sublimation only works on white or light-colored 100% polyester garments. DTF works on any fabric color or type, including cotton, dark garments, and blends.
DTF transfers work on almost any fabric, including:
- 100% Cotton
- 100% Polyester
- Cotton-poly blends
- Fleece, spandex, nylon, and denim
- Canvas, tote bags, hats, and accessories
Unlike sublimation, DTF works on both light and dark-colored garments. The white underbase layer ensures colors appear vivid and true-to-design even on black or navy fabric.
Yes. DTF prints have a noticeably softer hand feel than traditional HTV or plastisol screen printing. The ink bonds into the fabric fibers rather than sitting on top as a thick layer. Fine details, gradients, and small text all print cleanly without the stiff feel common with older transfer methods.
No minimums — ever. You can order a single transfer or hundreds of pieces. Whether you're a hobbyist testing a new design, a small business doing short runs, or a large apparel brand fulfilling bulk orders — we print it all.
A gang sheet is a large 22"-wide sheet where you pack multiple designs together to be printed at once. Instead of paying per-piece pricing for individual transfers, you fill the sheet with different designs and sizes — making it the most cost-efficient option.
Gang sheets start at $3.00. Individual transfers start at $6.00. If you have more than one design to print, a gang sheet almost always saves money.
Individual DTF transfers start at $6.00, priced by size. Gang sheets start at $3.00 and scale by sheet length. There are no setup fees, no plate charges, and no hidden costs. All pricing is shown transparently at checkout.
We accept credit and debit cards, PayPal, and bank transfers. All transactions are securely processed through Shopify. You'll receive an instant order confirmation email after checkout.
We accept PNG, PDF, SVG, AI, PSD, and JPG files up to 500MB. For best results:
- PNG with a transparent background is strongly recommended — this ensures only your design transfers, not a white box around it
- Minimum 150 DPI at your intended print size. 300 DPI preferred for sharp detail and fine lines
- Color mode: RGB (we handle all conversion internally)
Not sure if your file is ready? Submit it anyway — we do a free file check on every order and will contact you before printing if anything needs fixing.
Absolutely. Upload your artwork directly on the product page — just drag and drop your file at checkout. Our team reviews every design before printing. If we spot an issue, we'll reach out before pressing print so nothing goes to waste.
Yes — we provide basic design assistance at no extra charge. If you need a background removed, artwork resized, or multiple designs arranged on a gang sheet, email your file to affordabledtf@gmail.com and we'll optimize it before production.
For complex design work (building artwork from scratch, logo creation), we recommend tools like Adobe Illustrator, Canva, or Photoshop before uploading.
Wait about 10 seconds after pressing before peeling the film. For a second press (recommended to reduce shine and improve adhesion), place parchment paper or a Teflon sheet over the transfer and press for another 5 seconds.
Yes. Our transfers include a white ink underbase layer that ensures colors appear vibrant and accurate on black, navy, red, and all dark garments. The same transfer works on both light and dark shirts — no separate versions needed.
A heat press is strongly recommended for consistent, professional results. It provides even temperature and pressure across the entire transfer, which is critical for a permanent bond. A household iron can work for small flat designs but often produces uneven pressure, shorter wash durability, and edge lifting. If you're running a business, a quality heat press is worth the investment.
When applied correctly, our DTF transfers are rated for 50+ washes without significant fading, cracking, or peeling. For maximum longevity:
- Wash garments inside-out in cold water
- Avoid bleach and harsh detergents
- Tumble dry on low or air dry
- Do not dry clean
