Canva is one of the most accessible tools for building DTF gang sheets — no software download required, works in any browser, and the free version handles most basic gang sheet layouts. If you're new to building gang sheets or want a quick, beginner-friendly workflow, Canva is an excellent starting point.

This guide walks through the complete process of building a gang sheet in Canva from canvas setup to final export — including the settings you need, how to arrange designs efficiently, and the right export format for DTF printing.

What You'll Need

  • A Canva account (free works for basic gang sheets)
  • Canva Pro if you need background removal (recommended)
  • Your design files — PNG with transparent backgrounds, 300 DPI
  • Knowledge of your gang sheet dimensions (22" wide, whatever length you need)

Easier option: Affordable DTF has a built-in gang sheet builder on our website — upload your designs, arrange them, and order directly without any software. Use Canva if you prefer to build your layout offline or want more control over precise placement.

Step 1 — Set Up Your Canvas

  1. Go to canva.com and click Create a design
  2. Click Custom size at the top of the template options
  3. Set the dimensions — Canva works in pixels, so convert your inches to pixels at 300 DPI:
    • 22" wide = 6,600 pixels wide
    • Length depends on how much you need — 12" = 3,600px, 24" = 7,200px, 36" = 10,800px
  4. Click Create new design

Canva pixel limit: Canva has a maximum canvas size of 8,000 x 8,000 pixels on most plans. This means your gang sheet length is limited to approximately 26" at 300 DPI. For longer sheets, use Photoshop, Illustrator, or our built-in gang sheet builder which handles any length.

Step 2 — Set Background to Transparent

  1. In the editor, click on the white background of your canvas
  2. Delete it — press the Delete key
  3. You should now see a checkerboard pattern indicating a transparent canvas
  4. If you don't see the checkerboard, go to File → Settings and look for a transparent background option

A transparent canvas background ensures your gang sheet exports as a PNG with no white background around the designs — only the designs themselves will transfer when pressed.

Step 3 — Upload Your Designs

  1. Click Uploads in the left sidebar
  2. Click Upload files and select all your design PNG files
  3. Wait for them to finish uploading — they'll appear in your uploads panel
  4. Click each design to add it to your canvas

Background removal in Canva: If your designs have white backgrounds (not transparent), click on the image in the canvas → Edit image → Background Remover. This requires Canva Pro. Remove backgrounds from all designs before arranging them on the sheet.

Step 4 — Resize Designs to Their Print Size

This is the most important step. Each design needs to be sized to its actual intended print size before you arrange them on the sheet.

  1. Click on a design element in the canvas
  2. Look for the dimensions box in the top toolbar — it shows width and height in pixels
  3. Calculate the correct pixel size: desired inches × 300 = pixels
    • 5" design = 1,500 pixels wide
    • 8" design = 2,400 pixels wide
    • 10" design = 3,000 pixels wide
  4. Type the correct pixel dimensions into the dimension box and press Enter
  5. Repeat for each design

Step 5 — Arrange Designs Efficiently

Pack your designs onto the canvas to minimize wasted space:

  • Start with your largest designs — place big designs first, then fill gaps with smaller ones
  • Leave ¼" gap between designs — at 300 DPI, ¼" = 75 pixels. Keep designs at least 75px apart for clean cutting
  • Rotate designs to fit — use the rotation handle to turn designs sideways if they fit better that way
  • Fill the full 22" width — work in rows across the full width of the canvas before moving down
  • Use Canva's alignment tools — the Arrange menu has alignment and spacing tools to help organize your layout

Step 6 — Export as PNG

  1. Click Share in the top right corner
  2. Click Download
  3. File type: select PNG
  4. Check Transparent background — this is critical
  5. If available, select the highest quality option
  6. Click Download

Canva resolution warning: Canva exports PNG files at 96 DPI by default regardless of your canvas pixel dimensions. For DTF printing, this means your exported file will technically be labeled as 96 DPI. To compensate, build your canvas at 300 DPI pixel dimensions (22" × 300 = 6,600px wide) so the actual pixel count is correct even if the DPI metadata says 96. Our printing system works from pixel count, not DPI metadata.

Step 7 — Submit Your Order

Upload your exported PNG to affordabledtf.com, select your gang sheet length, and place your order. We do a free file check before printing — if we spot any issues with the layout, resolution, or transparency, we'll contact you before pressing print.

Canva Gang Sheet Tips

  • Use Canva's grid and ruler guides (View → Show rulers) to place designs precisely
  • Group related designs together so you can move them as a unit
  • Save your gang sheet design in Canva so you can easily add more designs or reorder the same layout
  • Name your Canva file with the sheet dimensions and date for easy reference

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I build a DTF gang sheet in Canva for free?

Yes for the layout itself — Canva free lets you set custom canvas sizes, upload images, arrange designs, and export as PNG. You need Canva Pro for the background remover. If your designs already have transparent backgrounds, free Canva works for the entire gang sheet process.

What canvas size do I use in Canva for a DTF gang sheet?

Gang sheets are 22" wide. At 300 DPI, that's 6,600 pixels wide. For length, multiply your desired inches by 300 — a 24" sheet is 7,200 pixels long. Enter these pixel dimensions in the Custom Size option when creating your design.

Does Canva export at 300 DPI?

Canva exports PNG at 96 DPI metadata, but if you build your canvas at the correct pixel dimensions for 300 DPI (6,600px wide for a 22" sheet), the actual pixel count is correct and your DTF transfer will print at the right size and quality.

What's the maximum gang sheet size I can build in Canva?

Canva's maximum canvas size is 8,000 x 8,000 pixels. At 300 DPI, this limits you to approximately 22" x 26.6". For longer sheets, use our built-in gang sheet builder, Photoshop, or Adobe Illustrator which don't have canvas size limits.
