How to Build a DTF Gang Sheet in Photoshop — Step-by-Step Guide
By Affordable DTF | File Prep Guide | 7 min read
Photoshop is the most precise and professional tool for building DTF gang sheets. Unlike browser-based tools with size limits, Photoshop handles any sheet length, works natively in inches at 300 DPI, and gives you full control over exact placement, spacing, and quality. If you're doing regular gang sheet orders or running a print business, Photoshop is worth learning for this workflow.
This guide walks through the complete gang sheet building process in Photoshop — from canvas setup to export — with the exact settings for DTF printing.
What You'll Need
- Adobe Photoshop (any recent version)
- Your design files — PNG with transparent backgrounds at 300 DPI
- Your gang sheet dimensions — 22" wide, whatever length you need
Step 1 — Create a New Document
- Open Photoshop and go to File → New
- Set these document settings:
- Width: 22 inches
- Height: your desired sheet length (12", 24", 36", etc.)
- Resolution: 300 pixels/inch
- Color Mode: RGB Color, 8 bit
- Background Contents: Transparent
- Click Create
File size note: A 22" x 24" canvas at 300 DPI is large — the PSD file will be 200-400MB depending on how many designs you add. Make sure you have sufficient hard drive space and RAM. At least 8GB RAM is recommended for smooth performance with large gang sheets.
Step 2 — Enable Rulers and Guides
- Go to View → Rulers (or Ctrl+R / Cmd+R) to show rulers in inches
- Right-click the ruler and make sure it's set to Inches
- Go to View → Snap and enable snapping for easier design placement
- Drag guide lines from the rulers to mark your ¼" border area around the canvas edges
Step 3 — Place Your First Design
- Go to File → Place Embedded
- Select your first PNG design file
- The design will appear in the canvas — click and drag to position it
- In the top toolbar, set the W (width) to your intended print size in inches
- Make sure the lock icon (maintain aspect ratio) is active so height scales proportionally
- Press Enter to confirm the placement
Use Place Embedded, not drag and drop. Dragging and dropping a PNG into Photoshop can import it at the wrong size. Place Embedded gives you control over the exact placement and preserves the original file data as a smart object.
Step 4 — Resize to Exact Print Dimensions
After placing each design, verify it's at the correct print size:
- With the design layer selected, press Ctrl+T (Cmd+T) to enter Free Transform mode
- In the top toolbar, change the width measurement to inches (click the % dropdown and select inches)
- Type the exact width you want — e.g., "5 in" for a 5" design
- Make sure the chain link (maintain aspect ratio) is active
- Press Enter twice to confirm
Step 5 — Arrange All Designs
Repeat Step 3 and 4 for each design. As you add designs:
- Leave ¼" between every design — use your ruler guides to maintain consistent spacing
- Work across the full 22" width before moving down to the next row
- Rotate designs if needed — Ctrl+T and rotate the bounding box handle
- Use the Move tool (V) to reposition placed designs
- Use the Layers panel to select specific designs — each placed image is on its own layer
Photoshop efficiency tip: Use Smart Guides (View → Show → Smart Guides) for automatic alignment. When moving a design, pink guide lines appear showing alignment with other elements and the canvas edges, making spacing consistent without manual measurement.
Step 6 — Check Transparency
Before exporting, verify your canvas background is truly transparent:
- Look at the Layers panel — there should be no solid background layer (the checkerboard pattern should be visible behind your designs)
- If there's a white background layer, click it and delete it
- The canvas should show a grey checkerboard pattern in all empty areas
Step 7 — Export as PNG
- Go to File → Export → Export As
- File Format: PNG
- Make sure Transparency is checked
- Quality: 100% (no compression)
- Verify the dimensions show your correct canvas size
- Click Export All and choose your save location
Don't use Save As for PNG export. Use File → Export → Export As for the most reliable transparent PNG output. "Save As PNG" can sometimes merge layers or flatten transparency differently depending on your Photoshop version.
Photoshop Gang Sheet Best Practices
- Save your PSD as you go — large gang sheet files can crash if you run out of memory
- Name your layers with the design name and size — makes it easy to find and edit specific designs
- Group designs by row — select all designs in a row, press Ctrl+G to group them. Makes reorganizing easier.
- Keep your PSD file for reorders — just update the design placement and re-export without rebuilding from scratch
- Use 8-bit color mode not 16-bit — DTF printing doesn't benefit from 16-bit and the file sizes are much smaller
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the correct Photoshop settings for a DTF gang sheet?
Create a new document at 22 inches wide (your desired length), 300 pixels/inch resolution, RGB Color mode, 8-bit, with a transparent background. Place designs using File → Place Embedded, size each to its print size in inches, and export as PNG with transparency enabled.
How large will my Photoshop gang sheet file be?
A 22"x24" canvas at 300 DPI with multiple placed designs typically creates a PSD file of 200-500MB. The exported PNG will be smaller — usually 20-100MB depending on complexity. Make sure you have sufficient storage and RAM (8GB minimum recommended) for working with large gang sheets.
Should I use smart objects for gang sheet designs in Photoshop?
Yes — when you use File → Place Embedded, Photoshop automatically creates smart objects. This is ideal because smart objects preserve the original file quality, allow non-destructive scaling, and let you edit the original design without affecting other elements on the sheet.
Can I use Photoshop Elements to build gang sheets?
Photoshop Elements has limited features compared to full Photoshop but can work for basic gang sheet layouts. The workflow is similar — create a new document at 22" wide at 300 DPI with a transparent background, place your designs, and export as PNG. Some advanced features like Smart Guides may not be available.
