How to Make a DTF Gang Sheet: Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners and Pros
By Affordable DTF | Gang Sheet Guide | 8 min read
A DTF gang sheet is the most cost-efficient way to print custom transfers — but if you've never made one before, figuring out how to set up your file, arrange your designs, and get the best value from your sheet can feel confusing.
This guide walks you through the entire process from start to finish — what software to use, how to set up your canvas, how to arrange designs for maximum efficiency, what file specs to follow, and how to submit your order. Whether you're making your first gang sheet or looking to optimize your workflow, this covers everything you need.
What Is a DTF Gang Sheet?
A gang sheet is a large sheet of DTF transfer film — typically 22 inches wide — where multiple designs are arranged together and printed as one job. Instead of ordering individual transfers one at a time, you pack as many designs as possible onto the sheet and pay by the sheet length rather than per design.
The result is a significant cost saving. Individual transfers start at $6.00 per piece. A gang sheet starts at $3.00 and can hold dozens of designs depending on their size — making your cost per transfer a fraction of ordering individually.
Example: A 22" x 24" gang sheet can hold approximately eight 5"x5" designs. At $3.00+ per sheet vs $6.00 per individual transfer, the savings add up fast — especially for businesses printing multiple designs regularly.
What You Need Before You Start
- Your design files — PNG with transparent background, 300 DPI at print size
- Design software — to arrange designs on a canvas (see options below)
- Your finished gang sheet file — one combined PNG or PDF at 300 DPI
What Software Can I Use to Build a Gang Sheet?
You don't need expensive software to build a gang sheet. Here are the most common options from beginner to advanced:
Affordable DTF Builder
Built-inOur online gang sheet builder lets you upload designs and arrange them on a 22" wide canvas directly in your browser — no software needed. The easiest option for most customers.
Canva
FreeSet a custom canvas size of 22" wide, upload your PNGs, arrange them, and export as a high-res PNG. Good for beginners. Free plan works fine for gang sheets.
Adobe Illustrator
PaidThe professional standard. Set artboard to 22" wide, place your designs as linked files, export as PDF or PNG at 300 DPI. Best for complex or high-volume work.
Photoshop
PaidCreate a 22"-wide canvas at 300 DPI, place your designs as smart objects, and export as a flattened PNG. Good if you're already comfortable in Photoshop.
Affinity Designer
Paid (one-time)A one-time purchase alternative to Illustrator. Works well for gang sheet layout with vector support. Export as PNG at 300 DPI.
Google Slides / PowerPoint
FreeNot ideal but workable in a pinch. Set slide dimensions to 22" wide, place images, export as PNG. Resolution may be lower — check your output before submitting.
Easiest option: Use our built-in gang sheet builder at affordabledtf.com — upload your files, drag and drop to arrange, and submit directly without any software setup.
Step-by-Step: How to Build a Gang Sheet
Before you open any software, make sure each design file is ready:
- Format: PNG with a transparent background. This is critical — a white background will transfer as a white rectangle around your design.
- Resolution: 300 DPI at your intended print size. A design you want to print at 10" wide needs to be at least 3000 pixels wide.
- Color mode: RGB. If your files are in CMYK, convert to RGB before uploading.
Image → Image Size → make sure Resolution shows 300 pixels/inch at your target print dimensions. If it shows 72 DPI, your file is too low resolution for quality DTF printing.
Open your software and create a new canvas with these dimensions:
- Width: 22 inches (the standard DTF roll width)
- Height: However long you need — start with 12", 24", or whatever length you're ordering
- Resolution: 300 DPI
- Color mode: RGB
- Background: Transparent or white — either works as the canvas background since only your designs will transfer
Important: Do not go wider than 22 inches. Our printer is 22" wide — anything wider will be cropped or rejected. You can go as long as you need but width must stay at 22".
Import each design file onto your canvas and arrange them to maximize the space. Here's how to pack efficiently:
- Rotate designs to fit better — a wide design turned sideways may open up space for another design next to it
- Leave ¼" gap between designs — this gives you room to cut them apart cleanly without risking cutting into another design
- Work from largest to smallest — place your biggest designs first, then fill gaps with smaller ones
- Stack designs vertically — fill the full 22" width before moving down to the next row
- Avoid wasted white space — every empty inch is money you're not getting value from
If you have a design that needs to be printed multiple times (like a logo for a run of shirts), duplicate it on the sheet as many times as it fits. Each copy presses onto a separate garment — it's much cheaper than ordering individual transfers for each piece.
Before you export, do a final review:
- All designs have transparent backgrounds (no white boxes)
- Minimum ¼" gap between every design
- No design extends past the 22" width boundary
- All designs are at 300 DPI at their placed size — not stretched up from a low-res file
- Canvas is set to RGB color mode
Stretching warning: Placing a small low-resolution image and scaling it up on the canvas does not increase its resolution. The image will print blurry. Always start with a high-res source file.
Export your finished layout as a single file:
- Best format: PNG at 300 DPI, flattened
- Also accepted: PDF, SVG, PSD, AI, JPG
- File size limit: 500MB
In Photoshop: File → Export → Export As → PNG, uncheck "Smaller File" to maintain quality.
In Illustrator: File → Export → Export As → PNG, 300 DPI, RGB.
In Canva: Download → PNG → check "Transparent background" if available on your plan.
Go to the gang sheet product page at affordabledtf.com, upload your file, select your sheet length, and add to cart. Every order includes a free file check — if we spot any issues with resolution, transparency, or layout, we'll contact you before printing so nothing is wasted.
Most orders ship within 1 business day. Orders placed before 10 AM EST typically ship the same day.
Gang Sheet Sizing Guide
How long should your sheet be? Here's a general guide based on common design sizes:
| Sheet Size | Approx. Designs (4"x4") | Approx. Designs (5"x5") | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22" x 12" | ~10 designs | ~6 designs | Small batches, testing |
| 22" x 24" | ~20 designs | ~12 designs | Medium runs, mixed sizes |
| 22" x 36" | ~30 designs | ~18 designs | Large batches, production runs |
| 22" x 48" | ~40 designs | ~24 designs | High volume, multiple SKUs |
Tip: These are estimates based on efficient packing with mixed orientations. Actual count depends on your specific design shapes and how well they nest together. Irregular shapes often pack less efficiently than square designs.
Common Gang Sheet Mistakes to Avoid
- White backgrounds instead of transparent — the most common mistake. Always export with transparency.
- Low resolution files scaled up — stretching a 72 DPI image to fill a large space on your canvas will print blurry.
- Designs too close together — leave at least ¼" between every design or you'll cut into them when separating.
- Going wider than 22" — the print will be cropped. Stay within the 22" width at all times.
- CMYK color mode — DTF printers use RGB. CMYK files can print with color shifts.
- Mirroring your designs — don't reverse or mirror your artwork. Submit it as it should appear on the finished garment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put different designs on the same gang sheet?
Yes — that's exactly what gang sheets are for. You can mix completely different designs, logos, text, and artwork on one sheet with no restrictions. There are no per-design fees and no limit on variety.
Does the order of designs on the sheet matter?
No. Arrange designs however they fit most efficiently. The only things that matter are that designs don't overlap, have at least a ¼" gap between them, and stay within the 22" width.
Can I send multiple separate files instead of one combined gang sheet?
Yes — if you use our online gang sheet builder, you can upload multiple individual files and arrange them in the browser. If you're submitting a pre-built gang sheet, send it as one combined file.
What if I don't fill the entire sheet?
You pay for the sheet length you order, not the space you fill. If you order a 24" sheet and only fill 18" of it, you're paying for 24". Order only as much length as you actually need — pack your designs first, then measure how long your layout is before placing your order.
How do I cut the transfers apart after printing?
Use scissors or a rotary cutter to cut between designs after you receive the sheet. Leave a small border around each design — the cut edge won't be visible after pressing. Precision cutting isn't required since the transfer film edge disappears under the fabric after application.
Do I need to mirror my designs for DTF printing?
No. Submit your artwork exactly as it should appear on the finished garment. Our printing process handles the transfer correctly — you should never mirror or reverse your files before submitting.
