How to Wash Shirts with DTF Transfers — Care Guide for Maximum Durability
By Affordable DTF | Care Guide | 5 min read
DTF transfers applied correctly are rated for 50+ washes — but that durability depends on how you care for the garment after pressing. The right washing and drying routine keeps your transfers looking vibrant and crack-free for years. The wrong routine can cause fading, cracking, and edge lifting after just a handful of washes.
This guide covers exactly how to wash and care for shirts, hoodies, and other garments decorated with DTF transfers — including what to do, what to avoid, and the care instructions to include when selling decorated garments to customers.
The Quick Care Guide
Wash inside out
Protects the transfer surface from friction against the drum and other garments
Cold water
Hot water breaks down adhesive bonds faster. Cold water extends transfer life significantly
Gentle cycle
Less agitation means less stress on the transfer edges and adhesive
Tumble dry low
Low heat is safe for DTF transfers. High heat over time degrades the adhesive bond
No bleach
Bleach destroys DTF ink and adhesive rapidly — even color-safe bleach accelerates fading
No dry cleaning
Dry cleaning chemicals dissolve DTF adhesive. Never dry clean DTF-decorated garments
No ironing on transfer
Direct iron contact melts and distorts the transfer surface. Iron inside out only
No hot water
Hot wash cycles accelerate adhesive breakdown and color fading over time
Washing DTF Transfers Step by Step
Before the first wash
Wait at least 24 hours after pressing before washing a newly decorated garment. The adhesive continues to cure after pressing and benefits from extra time to fully bond with the fabric fibers. Washing too soon — especially within the first few hours — can weaken the initial bond.
Turning garments inside out
This is the single most important step. Washing right-side out causes the transfer surface to rub directly against the washing machine drum, zipper pulls, buttons, and other garments. This friction wears the transfer surface faster and can cause edge lifting over time. Inside out keeps the transfer protected on every cycle.
Water temperature
Always use cold water — 30°C (86°F) maximum. Hot water doesn't just fade colors — it softens the thermoplastic adhesive layer that bonds the transfer to the fabric. Over repeated hot washes this softening and re-hardening cycle causes the adhesive to lose grip and the transfer edges to begin lifting.
Detergent selection
Use a mild detergent without bleach or optical brighteners. Standard liquid detergents like Tide Free or similar mild formulas work well. Avoid:
- Detergents with bleach (even "color-safe" formulas)
- Detergents with optical brighteners (they can affect color over time)
- Fabric softener directly on the transfer area (can reduce adhesion over time)
- Pods with bleach or brightener additives
Cycle selection
Use a gentle or delicate cycle when possible. The reduced agitation is easier on transfer edges than a heavy or normal cycle. For bulk production runs where gentle cycle isn't practical, cold water normal cycles still produce acceptable results — just slightly shorter longevity over many washes.
Drying
Two options:
- Air dry (best for longevity) — hang or lay flat to dry. No heat exposure at all.
- Tumble dry low (acceptable) — low heat setting only. Avoid medium or high heat dryer settings which degrade adhesive faster.
Never use high heat dryer settings on DTF-decorated garments. The combination of heat and tumbling over many cycles degrades the adhesive bond significantly faster than low heat or air drying.
Ironing DTF Transfers
You can iron garments with DTF transfers — with one important rule: never iron directly on the transfer surface.
- Turn the garment inside out and iron on the reverse side of the fabric
- Or place a pressing cloth or parchment paper between the iron and the transfer
- Use a medium heat setting — avoid steam directly on the transfer area
Direct iron contact will melt and distort your DTF transfer. The transfer surface softens under the direct heat of an iron and will either stick to the iron, develop a shiny melted appearance, or lose fine detail. Always iron inside out or use a pressing cloth.
Care Instructions Card for Your Customers
If you're selling decorated garments, include these care instructions with every order. You can print these on a small card, add them to your packaging, or include them in your order confirmation email:
Care for your custom garment:
✓ Wash inside out in cold water
✓ Use mild detergent — no bleach
✓ Tumble dry low or air dry
✗ Do not dry clean
✗ Do not iron directly on the print
✗ Do not use bleach or fabric softener on the print area
How Long Do DTF Transfers Last with Proper Care?
With correct application and proper washing care, DTF transfers from Affordable DTF are rated for 50+ washes without significant fading, cracking, or peeling. Many customers report their transfers looking excellent after 80-100 washes when following cold water, inside-out washing practices.
The biggest factors that reduce longevity:
- Hot water washing (most damaging over time)
- High heat dryer settings
- Bleach exposure
- Incorrect application (insufficient press time or temperature)
- Washing right-side out repeatedly
Frequently Asked Questions
How soon can I wash a shirt after pressing a DTF transfer?
Wait at least 24 hours after pressing before the first wash. The adhesive continues to cure and strengthen after pressing. Washing within a few hours of pressing can weaken the initial bond before it fully sets.
Can DTF transfers go in the dryer?
Yes — on low heat only. High heat dryer settings degrade the adhesive bond over time. Low heat or air drying is recommended for maximum transfer longevity. Never use a high heat setting on DTF-decorated garments.
Will bleach ruin a DTF transfer?
Yes. Bleach — including color-safe bleach — degrades DTF ink and adhesive. Even occasional bleach exposure accelerates fading and adhesive breakdown. Use only mild detergents without bleach on garments decorated with DTF transfers.
How many times can you wash a DTF transfer?
With proper care (cold water, inside out, mild detergent, low heat drying), DTF transfers are rated for 50+ washes without significant degradation. Many customers report excellent results after 80-100 washes with consistent cold water washing.
Can I iron a shirt with a DTF transfer?
Yes, but never directly on the transfer surface. Always iron inside out or place parchment paper between the iron and the transfer. Direct iron contact will melt and distort the transfer surface.
